WAV is often uncompressed and much larger than MP3. Converting to MP3 trades some audio fidelity for a much smaller file that is easier to send and store.

How much smaller will MP3 be?
It depends on the WAV sample rate, channels, duration, and selected MP3 bitrate. Uncompressed WAV files often shrink substantially.
Is WAV lossless?
Typical PCM WAV is uncompressed. MP3 is lossy, so converting to MP3 discards some audio information to reduce size.
Which bitrate is good for speech?
96–128 kbps is often enough for speech. Music typically benefits from 192 kbps or higher.
